21st Century CISM - The 10th World Congress
A bridge collapses in Assam, killing two people. A freshman at an upstate New York university dies when he returns to a burning apartment building to rescue other residents. Nine people die in an airliner crash in Amsterdam. More than a dozen middle school students are injured in a truck/bus collision in rural New York state. These are the stories from just seven days of news; in each case there will be people in need of emotional first aid: survivors, family members, emergency responders.
So, while investigators sift through debris, and elected officials study ways to prevent similar incidents, Critical Incident Stress Management(CISM) teams will be working with those groups and individuals in need of that emotional first aid. Many will take time away from jobs and families to provide that help. And those responders also could use some help.
The 10th World Congress, sponsored by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation, helps those who provide that emotional first aid. Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) training sessions, keynote speakers, and workshop sessions bring CISM team members together from around the world to learn from those who have responded and worked those kinds of incidents.
This year's World Congress offers a broad range of topics for discussion: lessons from specific high profile events; skill development; team management; military situations and response, and even sessions on using technology. Even in seemingly hard economic conditions, hundreds of CISM team members are heading to Baltimore to renew their spirit and increase their skills.
